Germany participates in SAIREC
In October 2015, South Africa will become the first country in Africa to host the International Renewable Energy Conference – SAIREC. It provides a global platform for government, private sector and civil society leaders to advance renewable energy.
Hosted by the South African Department of Energy together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), SAIREC underpins the country’s strive for sustainable economic growth through renewable energies.
Germany will be present - exhibiting a stall during the conference. The giz programme ‘Skills for Green Jobs (S4GJ)’ is part of the German attendance, informing about the newly developed subject ‘Renewable energy technologies (RET)’ and the corresponding student books, plus other didactic material.
RET was developed in response to South Africa’s needs to foster skills in renewable energy technologies. To address this issue, the S4GJ programme, together with the South African Departments of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Science and Technology (DST) jointly developed and implemented RET as a new NC(V) optional subject. Student textbooks as well as lecturer guides accompany it.
The RET subject is now offered as part of a 3 year programme since January 2015. We are pleased to see that to date 500 students from 7 public TVET colleges are enrolled.
